Telecommunication Authority of Singapore (Amendment) Act 1998 came into effect in May 1998 and amends the Telecommunication Authority
of Singapore Act. It's main objective is to empower TAS to create an economic framework for the operation and provision of telecom services condusive to a
competitive and anti-monopolistic market. Some significant amendments are:
- TAS may impose additional conditions on telecommunication licensees with regard to arrangements for the interconnection, access and sharing of infrastructure;
- TAS may issue codes of practice or standards of performance for compliance by telecommunication
licensees;
- TAS' approval would need to be sought for the connection of telecommunication equipment or systems of licensees;
- TAS may issue directions to telecommunications licensees or developers/owners of buildings with regard to
the installation of facilities for telecommunication services;
- TAS may suspend licenses;
- Enhanced penalties for specified offences.
